Stephen A. “Mitch” Mitchell

Memorial services for Stephen A. “Mitch” Mitchell, 64, Lawrence will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. He died May 1, 2013 at his home.
He was born July 27, 1948 in Lawrence, KS the son of Kenneth E. and Mary Katherine (Barber) Mitchell.
He graduated from Lawrence High School in 1967. During his high school years, he became part of the LHS gymnastic team, where he earned several medals as a Kansas gymnastic champion.
In 1968 he joined the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, NV. He then was sent to Thailand during the Vietnam War. He was a mechanic for the F-111 aircrafts.
He was employed for 34 years at ICL, formerly FMC in Lawrence as a lab technician/chemist.
Mitch was a member of the Northeast Kansas American Poolplayers Association (APA) and a member of the Monday night 9-ball pool league. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed playing golf and fantacy football.
He married Cheryl Vitt on December 27, 1974 in Lawrence, KS. She survives in the home.
Other survivors include one daughter, Stacy Mitchell, Emporia, KS; two sons, Andrew Norton-Mitchell, and wife, Dr. Amy Fowler, Allen, TX, Jared Mitchell, Sedalia, MO; two grandchildren, Enzo, and Jasper; one sister, Sheri L. Mull, Goodland, KS; and two brothers, Michael E. Mitchell, Napa, CA, and David H. Mitchell, Baldwin City, KS; several nieces & nephews.
The family will greet friends from 5 – 7 p.m. on Friday, May 10, 2013 at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials in his name to The Kansas Society for Children with Challenges – Wichita and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
