Stanley A. Kern

Stanley A. Kern, formerly of Lawrence, KS, passed away February 23, 2013, at Kingswood Manor, Kansas City, MO. Stan was born January 5, 1926, to Alexander & Gladys Kern, in McCook, NE. He grew up in Denver, CO, graduating from North High School. He served as a member of the United States Marine Corps in Saipan during World War II. He returned to Denver after receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star, and attended the University of Denver, where he met the love of his life, Frances Patterson Kern. They married in December, 1949 and he was by her side when she passed away in December of 2010, after 61 years of parenting, partnering and loving each other through sickness and in health. Stan went to work for Oldsmobile Division of General Motors, starting in the Denver Zone, and moved his family from Denver to Casper, WY, Houston, TX, King of Prussia, PA, Hingham, MA, Okemos, MI, Leawood, KS, Rochester, MI, Okemos, MI and finally retiring to Lawrence, KS. In each new city, Dad & Mom put down roots as though they would live there a lifetime, and cultivated friendships which spanned the country and their lifetime. While his vocation was management in the automobile industry, Stan had many avocations. His volunteer calling led him to running audio and broadcasts for churches they joined along the way, as well as teaching Adult Education. He and Frankie were Stephen Ministry leaders and Ministers and volunteered cooking for LINK in Lawrence. Stan served on the COM and Synod for the Presbytery of Kansas. He was a Master Hunter Safety instructor, teaching many teens proper gun handling and outdoor skills. He enjoyed hunting, swimming and golfing. He shared interests with Frankie that included gardening, Oriental Art, Southwest Native American Pottery, music, bird watching and star gazing. He was a proud lifetime member of the NRA. Stan was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Eugene Kern (JoAnn), his sister, Mary Ann, and his beloved wife, Frankie. He leaves their three children: Pat (Steve), and their children, Josh (Chantal & their son, Aiden), Jesse (Angel Gallo) Harlan. Steve (Pat), and their children, Emily (Sven and their children, Gavin, Logan & Tegan) Nelson, Erin (Alex and their daughter, Olivia) Brown and Alex Kern. Pam (Glenn) and their children Aaron (Shalia Satter & their daughter, Quinlyn), Oliver and Philip (Rebekah Godke) Read. He also is survived by his sister-in-law, Patricia (Vic) Stamm, of Silverton, British, Columbia. Please join us in celebrating Stan’s life on Saturday, March 9th, 2013, 1:00 pm, at Covenant Chapel, 13300 Kenneth Road, Leawood, KS. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions to John Knox Village Hospice, 400 NW Murray Rd., Lee’s Summit, MO 64081, which carried our family through the passing of both of our parents with grace, love and dignity. The family wishes to give heartfelt thanks to the staff of Kingswood Manor both in independent living and in the long term care, particularly Alice, Bison, Charlotte, Delphina, Genericah, Glenda, Mariel, Martin, Megan and Melody.
