Maxine Helene Summers 1911 - 2013 Lawrence
Graveside services will be held for Maxine Helene Summers, 101, Lawrence, in the Riverside Cemetery in Waterville, Kansas at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 9, 2013. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Lawrence. She died January 4, 2013, in Lawrence. She was born November 2, 1911, in Barnes, Kansas, first child of Edwin Eugene Newton Coan and Gertrude Mabel Clark.
She graduated in 1929 from Barnes High School and worked for a number of years in California for Pacific Bell. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence, and Telephone Pioneers of America.
She married L. Marcellus Gnagy on April 1, 1944, who predeceased her. On September 21, 1980, she married Bernard O. Summers, who also predeceased her. Survivors include three nephews, Clark Henry Coan of Lawrence, Edward Coan of Kansas City, Missouri, and Marc Coan of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other survivors include a cousin, Kent Clark, of Portland, Oregon. A brother, Clark Coan of Lawrence, predeceased her.
The family suggests memorials to the Clark Coan International Student Leadership Award Fund in care of the KU Endowment Association or to the First United Methodist Church of Lawrence.
