Richard Roderick Pine, Jr., died at home on Feb.9, 2013 surrounded by his family, following a lengthy illness. He was the first of three sons born to Richard and Georgia (nee Phillips) Pine of Lawrence, KS, who predeceased him. He graduated in 1967 from Lawrence High School. In 1971 he received his Bachelor’s degree in Slavic Languages and Soviet Area Studies from the University of Kansas and spent the summer of 1970 at Leningrad State University as an exchange student. From 1971-74, he served in the U.S. Army Security Agency in Germany at the height of the Cold War. He returned to K.U. for his MBA. In 1977, he began 35 years of employment in Finance at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn MI.
In 1979, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Cindy Gallup. Together they raised three children, the source of much pride.
In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by son Nathan (wife Danielle) of Northville, by daughter Amanda of Novi, and by son Matthew (wife Stella) of St. Louis MO; by brothers Randall (and Shirley Wittebort) of Lawrence KS and Russell (wife Marcia) of Pleasant Hill MO; by parents-in- law Alfred and Winifred Gallup of Lawrence KS; and by sister-in-law Dr. Nancy Penland (husband Ralph) of Bedford MA; by numerous nieces and nephews; and by many wonderful friends.
Mr. Pine served in numerous capacities at his church, St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor, and volunteered as Treasurer for both his county political party and his homeowners’ association. He also served six years on the Board for the Livingston County Airport. In his “free” time, he enjoyed being with his family, reading, and watching Jayhawks basketball & Redwings hockey. He waited confidently for his Savior to take him home.
Services will be held at the church, located at 420 West Liberty St. in Ann Arbor, Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations are asked for St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ann Arbor, and/or St. Joseph Mercy Hospice of Livingston County.
