Julia R. Bennett

Julia R. Bennett, age 98, of Ottawa, Kansas, died Sunday, October 14, 2012. She was born on Saturday, October 18, 1913 in Franklin County, Kansas, the daughter of Earnest LaGrange and Eva May (Smith) Hume.
Julia was a near lifelong Franklin County resident. She moved with her husband Harold to Independence, Kansas in 1939 to 1942; Pittsburg, Kansas in 1942 to 1954; and Newton, Kansas in 1954 to 1959; moving back to Ottawa in 1959 where she made her home until her death.
Julia graduated from Ottawa High School with the class of 1931 and attended Kansas State Teachers College of Emporia where she received her teaching certificate.
She was a homemaker and taught school five years in Franklin County. She was also a teller for seventeen and a half years with Anchor Savings, retiring in 1976.
Julia was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was involved in Outreach Circle, past President of Business & Professional Women, Sequel Club, Four Seasons Garden Club, Ransom Memorial Ladies Auxiliary where she volunteered fifteen years in the Gift Shop, she volunteered her services for thirty-three years at Friends of the Library where she helped at the bookstore and was a Franklin County Election Board worker for many years.
Her greatest love and joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing Bridge and was a passionate fan of University of Kansas Men’s basketball.
On May 25, 1937, Julia was united in marriage to Harold R. Bennett in Franklin County, Kansas. He preceded her in death on May 27, 2011.
She is also preceded in death by her parents; and brother, Harley Hume.
Surviving family members include a daughter, Sharon Kay Underwood of Ottawa; granddaughter, Barb J. Wells and husband A. R. of Lawrence, Kansas; grandson, Kyle Underwood of Denver, Colorado; great- grandchildren, Vaughn and Keira Wells of Lawrence; and many nieces and nephews.
SERVICES: Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Friday, October 19, 2012, at Dengel & Son Mortuary.
IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Bennett at the Dengel & Son Mortuary after 9:00 A.M. Thursday, October 18, 2012, to the service hour where the family will meet with friends from 7:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday.
CEMETERY: Interment Highland Cemetery, Ottawa, Kansas
