Madge Eva McArthur

Madge Eva McArthur, 93, of Topeka, passed away Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
She was born November 14, 1918 in Lamar, CO, the daughter of George Wesley and Jessie (Anderson) Jones. She was a graduate of Liberty Memorial High School in Lawrence, KS and received a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Education from Washburn University. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega at University of Kansas.
Mrs. McArthur was employed as a teacher for USD 501 for 20 years, retiring in 1984. She also taught Children’s Literature at Washburn University. She was the owner of the first preschool in Lawrence, known as Jayhawk Junior Preschool.
She was a member and Past President of the Topeka Garden Club and the Early Childhood Education Association of Kansas. She was a lifetime member of the Kansas University Alumni Association. Other memberships include Mother’s Singers and Pink Lady Auxiliary.
Madge married Dr. Harvey J. McArthur on June 16, 1941 in Stafford, KS. He preceded her in death on July 3, 2008. Survivors include three children, Rebecca D. (Danny) McMillen, Baldwin City, Sally B. (Dennis) Mayo, Topeka and John C. (Sandy) McArthur, Topeka; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister Georgia Lucille Pettis, Eudora, KS; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a brother, Eldred C. Jones.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m., Thursday, October 4, 2012 at the Mount Hope Chapel, 4700 SW 17th Street, Topeka. A graveside service will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery, Topeka. Madge will lie in state at the Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel, 3700 SW Wanamaker Rd, Topeka, from 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday.
