Virgil A. Schmidtberger

Memorial Mass for Virgil A. Schmidtberger, 86, Lawrence will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2012 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. He died November 11, 2012 at Pioneer Ridge Rapid Recovery.
He was born April 10, 1926 in Victoria, Kansas the son of Michael J. and Catherine (Meier) Schmidtberger.
He served in the US Navy from May 1944 to June 1946. He married Rita Stramel on June 22, 1948 in Hays. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2008.
In 1951, while attending Kansas University he started a painting company, the present day Lawrence Decorating Service. He was a member of the 40&8 of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include a son, Gary Schmidtberger of Lawrence; a daughter, Catharine “Cathy” Raddatz, and husband, John of Overland Park, KS; a brother Loren of New York; a sister, Janice of Oakland, CA; grandchildren, Kristine Vogt, husband Mark; Karen Ingersoll, husband, Jason; Ian Raddatz; five great-grandchildren, Aaron, Luke, Ryan and Noah Vogt and Makayla Ingersoll. He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 13, 2012 with a rosary at 5:30 p.m. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
The family suggests memorials in his name to Visiting Nurses or Corpus Christi Catholic Church and may be sent in care of the Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
