Winfred 'Winnie' Harold Abbott 1917 - 2012 Lawrence
Funeral services for Winfred “Winnie” Harold Abbott, 95, Lawrence will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Abbott went to be with his heavenly father and loving wife and children on March 6, 2012, his 95th birthday.
Winnie was born on March 6, 1917 in Fall Leaf, Kansas, one of eight children born to George Washington and Clara Elizabeth (Mathews) Abbott.
He served his country in the U.S. Army for 4 years during World War II in Co L, 53rd Regiment as a rifleman in the Aleutian Islands, attaining the rank of Private First Class and earning the Good Conduct Medal.
Winnie worked in the X-ray department as a Shop Foreman and in the Maintenance department at Hercules Powder Plant for a total of 28 years. Winnie was a member of the Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church, Alford-Clarke Post #852, VFW, and Laborers’ International Union of North America, where he was a member for 55 years.
Winnie lived in Eudora most of his life. After retirement, he and his wife spent the winters in Southern Texas, where they made many new friends and were left with many fond memories.
He was united in marriage with Lorena Alma Shoup on August 21, 1948 in Topeka, KS. They shared 56 years of marriage before she went to be with the Lord on April 9, 2005.
Winnie had a strong faith in his Lord and Savior, and his faith was a constant rock for him and Lorena. He loved working jigsaw puzzles and could also be counted on for his orneriness and sense of humor.
Survivors include one daughter, Jeanne Torneden, Lawrence, Kansas and one daughter-in-law, Shirley Varney, Belton, Missouri; 17 Grandchildren; 25 Great-Grandchildren and 10 Great-Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Virginia Lee Bourgeault in February 2007, Geraldine Faye Coleman in February 2010; two sons, Donald Eugene Campbell in November 1976, Gerald Ray Campbell in August 2001; 5 brothers and two sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Southern Baptist Church or Grace Hospice, and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
The family will greet friends to celebrate the life of Winnie from 5 – 6:30 p.m. on Friday, March 9, 2012 at the Mortuary.
