Thomas C. Fuller 1928 - 2012 Salida, Colo.
Thomas C. Fuller, age 83, died at his home in Salida, Colorado, on January 23, 2012 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Tom was born October 28, 1928 in Pittsburg, Kansas, to the late Frank A. and Martha J. Fuller. He graduated from Larned High School, Larned, Kansas, in 1946. He served in the United States Navy ROTC while studying Engineering Physics at the University of Kansas. Following graduation from KU in 1951, he joined the U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team with whom he served in the Korean War. He attained the rank of Lieutenant before being honorably discharged in 1954.
Following his military service, Tom went to work for the geophysics division of Shell Oil Company working in Wyoming and Texas. While in Texas, he pursued graduate studies in geophysics at the University of Texas. Tom went on to further Graduate studies at the University of Kansas where he eventually spent a 32-year career in research. He was a life-long student of the natural world, a voracious consumer of scientific writing, and a disciple of western civilization and human history. He also dearly loved his country and was a lifetime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Tom and Shirley A. Almquist were married on January 28, 1951. Tom and Shirley remained together almost 61 years. They raised their two children in Lawrence, Kansas, where they lived a happy prosperous life on Mississippi Street. After retiring from KU in 1993, Tom and Shirley moved to Salida, Colorado, a place he dearly loved for its natural beauty and small-town simplicity. In Colorado he enjoyed a happy retirement as an amateur researcher of the surrounding environs and the history of Central Colorado.
Tom is survived by his wife, Shirley, Salida, Colorado; his son David, Sherwood, Oregon; his son, Robert, Lawrence, Kansas. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Emily, Chase, Elsa, and Luther. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his one brother, James R. Fuller of Bellevue, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial funds have been established in his name at Angel of Shavano Hospice, 8044 W. Highway 50, Suite 202, Salida, Colorado 81201. Our family dearly appreciates their caring aid in a difficult time. We are also deeply grateful for the support of many others in Salida and across the country; they are too numerous to name. A service will be held in Larned, Kansas, at a date to be determined.
