Elizabeth 'Betty' L. Egan 1937 - 2012
A Celebration of Life for Elizabeth L. “Betty” Egan, 74, Lawrence, will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Unity Church of Lawrence.
Mrs. Egan died Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012, at her home.
She was born Dec. 9, 1937, in Maspeth, N.Y., the daughter of John Matthew and Mary Ryan Staugaitis. She graduated from Thorpe Secretarial School. She married William K. Egan on Sept. 7, 1957, in Queens, N.Y.
She and her husband were honored as Citizens of the Year by the Holbrook, N.Y., Chamber of Commerce in 1990. She also served as president, secretary, and treasurer of the Holbrook Lioness Club and was involved in many of its activities, including the food pantry, community Thanksgiving dinner and the committee for a Drug Free Holbrook. Upon moving to Lawrence, she worked for Laidlaw Transit and at Schwegler School as a paraeducator. She also served as secretary of the Ladies Literary League and was on the Board of the Unity Church in Lawrence. She volunteered at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in the gift shop and in Mario’s Closet, and at Habitat for Humanity. She enjoyed gardening, and spending time with her friends, children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2000. She was also preceded in death by her parents, and her brothers, John and Gerry Staugaitis.
Survivors include a son, Bill Egan, Sayville, N.Y.; two daughters, Susan Egan and husband Eric Elsinghorst, Lawrence; Diane Trommer and husband Russell, West Islip, N.Y.; and five grandchildren, Stephen, Gillian, Sarah, Evan, and William.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Habitat for Humanity, in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS, 66044. The church requests any floral arrangements be delivered by 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
