Harriet Darby Gibson 1918 - 2012
Harriet Darby Gibson, 93, born September 10, 1918, passed away February 25, 2012. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 1st at the Cathedral of St. Peter, 416 N. 14th St., Kansas City, Kansas. Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS, with a Rosary service at 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Kansas Williams Educational Fund, to the Cathedral of St. Peter’s or Sisters Servants of Mary, Kansas City, KS.
Harriet was the oldest of four daughters of United States Senator Harry Darby and Edith Cubbison Darby of Kansas City, Kansas. She graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1936 and attended the University of Kansas where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She married Thomas Henry Gibson, on May 3, 1941.
Harriet was president of the Junior League of Wyandotte and Johnson counties in 1954-1955 and served on the regional nominating committee of the International Junior League from 1956-1958. She served as Board member and Past President of the Providence Hospital Auxiliary. Harriet was a member of the Kansas University Alumni Association and the Williams Fund; a member of St. Peter’s Altar Society; the Pi Phi Alumni Club of Kansas City, KS; a past member of Terrace Club; Victory Hills Country Club; Wyandotte County Historical Society; Cancer Action Board of Directors; and the Friends of the Library. Harriet was proud to be a stay at home mother, but served as a bridal consultant at Winkler’s Jewelers from 1971-1983. She followed her beloved Jayhawks and was a devoted fan of Kansas Basketball throughout her lifetime.
Harriet was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Thomas H. Gibson; her father and mother, Harry Darby and Edith Cubbison Darby, and her sister, Marjorie Alford.
Harriet is survived by her Children, Harry (Becky) Gibson, Cathy (Bob) Stiglic, John (Kristie) Gibson, Nancy (Scott) Collins, and Paul (Claudia) Gibson; her Grandchildren, Lisa (Dan) O’Rourke, Michael Gibson, Alan (Angel) Stiglic, Paul (Amy) Stiglic, Lori (Darren) Farley, Katie (Josh) Gibson-Roegiers, Hannah Gibson, Joseph Gibson, Thomas Gibson; Step-Grandchildren Jessica Collins, Alexis Collins; Great-Grandchildren Darby O’Rourke, Megan O’Rourke, Dan O’Rourke, Miles Gibson, Camden Gibson, Jack Stiglic, Henry Stiglic, Jane Stiglic, Lillian Farley, and Luke Farley; her Sisters, Joan Edwards, Edith Marie Evans, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her family would like to specially thank Mary and her angels, especially Lavern and Letitia for all their loving care.
