Bette Jean Leib 1925 - 2012
Funeral services for Bette Jean Leib, 87, Lawrence, will be held 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2012, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Burial will follow at Wellsville Cemetery. She died February 17, 2012 at her home.
She was born on January 17, 1925 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Leon and Alice (Downing) Miller.
Bette was employed at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant during WWII. In 1968 she went to work for Douglas County Public Works Department. She served under four county engineers and twelve county commissioners before retiring in 1990. Douglas County Commissioners approved a resolution honoring Bette for her years of service to the county and she received a letter of recognition from Governor Hayden. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Lawrence and Waverly. Bette enjoyed Brown Bag Lunch Concerts and was an avid Jayhawk fan, always wearing KU gear on game days. Bette was an environmentalist long before it was “cool”.
She married William F. “Bill” Leib on January 10, 1943 in Wellsville, KS. They enjoyed traveling and visited many destinations during their sixty years of marriage. Bill preceded her in death on November 29, 2002.
Survivors include one daughter, Debbie Jo Sump and husband, Dean, Ottawa; three sons, Billy L. Leib, Ottawa, Michael K. Leib and wife, Sandra, Lawrence, Steven R. Leib and wife, Carolyn, Moscow, Idaho; sister, Sally Barnett, Wellsville;
8 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Robert “Bob” Miller.
The family will greet friends 5:30 – 7 p.m. Thursday, February, 23, 2012 at the mortuary.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Lawrence Humane Society or the American Legion and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
