John Eugene Menaugh 1921 - 2012 Lawrence
John E. (Skeets) Menaugh, 91, Lawrence, KS, formerly of Kansas City, KS, died Nov. 29, 2012. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, December 4, at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS, where friends may call from 9-10 a.m. Burial in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society in honor of his late wife, Ella May.
Skeets was born April 25, 1921, in Rosedale, KS, to Grace Beulah and Robert "Budge" Menaugh. He was raised by his mother and stepfather, Eugene Styles Griggs. During his childhood, Skeets attended Kansas City, KS, schools as Eugene Griggs, graduating from Washington High School in 1939. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps the day after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and reported for service on January 2, 1942. He served with the 49th Fighter Group overseas until July 1945. On February 9, 1946, he married Ella May Bender in Kansas City, KS, and they moved to Lawrence in 1998. Preceding him in death were Ella May in 2001, his parents, and his brother, Robert Griggs. Surviving are his three sons and their families, Dave and Linda Menaugh of Conroe, TX; John and Cindy Menaugh of Crescent City, CA, and Steve and Karla Menaugh of La Grange, KY; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. Menaugh worked for Constable-Hodgins Printing Co. for 35 years and was a member of the Graphic Arts Commission, formerly the Kansas City Pressman's Union, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Bethel Post 5851, Central Christian Church in Kansas City, KS, and the American Legion 14, Lawrence, KS. He was a volunteer escort at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital from 2001 to 2009.
