Michael Dean Hemphill

Services for Michael Dean Hemphill, 61, of Lawrence, KS will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 24, 2012 at Warren-McElwain Mortuary in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. He died on Friday, August 17, 2012 at his home after a battle with cancer. By his side was his longtime companion, Cindy Quick.
He was born on July 16, 1951 in Lawrence, KS the son of Arthur Charles and Ruth Ellen Colburn Hemphill. He was born during the Great Flood of 1951, when his mother arrived at Lawrence Memorial Hospital via a small airplane.
Michael (Mike) received an Associate’s Degree from Garden City Community Junior College.
A farmer third-generation in the area, Michael followed in the footsteps of his father, Art, and his grandfather,
Joseph Charles Hemphill. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lawrence. Michael is survived
by his companion Cindy Quick, of the home, his sisters and their spouses, Judith (Hemphill) and Gerald Hundley, Lawrence, KS, Linda (Hemphill) and Donald Buttron, of Nortonville, KS, nephew and nieces, Jay Hundley of Baldwin, Jody Hundley of Irving, TX, Jane Hundley of Lexington, MA, Kelly (Buttron) Jobbins of Nortonville, and Kristy Strother of Nortonville; and seven great nephews and nieces.
His family will remember him for his generous spirit, sense of humor, and gentle ways.
The family suggests memorials in his name to the Douglas County Visiting Nurses or to the Lawrence Humane Society and may be sent in care of the mortuary.
The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time on Friday at the mortuary.
