Margaret Colman Wulfkuhle 1913 - 2012 Lawrence
Memorial Services for long-time Douglas County resident, Margaret Colman Wulfkuhle, 98, Lawrence will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 30, 2012 at First Christian Church in Lawrence. Private inurnment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at a later date. Pastor David Rivers will be officiating. She died Tuesday, April 24, 2012 at her home.
Margaret was born on November 4, 1913 in Lawrence, KS, the daughter of Asa R. and Nellie (Everett) Colman.
Margaret attended Kanwaka Grade School and Liberty Memorial High School and graduated from the University of Kansas in 1937 with Phi Beta Kappa honors and a B.A. in Sociology.
She taught for eleven years in elementary schools and two years in Continuing Education at KU. She later worked in the Audio and Visual Department at the University of Kansas as an Audio/Visual Methods Supervisor.
She was married to Ross E. Wulfkuhle on March 7, 1943 in Lawrence, KS. He preceded her in death November 19, 2009.
Margaret was a member of the Kanwaka Literary Club, Betty Washington Chapter of the DAR, First Christian Church, Lecompton Historical Society, and KU Alumni Association. She was a 1927 charter member of the Kanwaka 4-H Club and served as an adult leader for many years. She was an active member of the Kanwaka FCE for 47 years and received the Heart of FCE Award in 2002, recognizing her outstanding service in every aspect of the organization. Ross and Margaret were unofficial good will ambassadors for their rural neighborhood, respected for their friendliness, generosity, and work ethic. They were particularly interested in family, local, and Kansas history. Margaret once wrote that she tried to make a difference in the community by caring for her neighbors and helping young people achieve their goals.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda and husband, Guido Cecchini, Vero Beach, Florida, and Virginia Wulfkuhle, Topeka.
The family will greet friends following the services at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or Kansas 4-H Foundation - Ralph Colman Achievement Award and may be sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary.
