Hazel Catherine Flaum

Hazel Catherine Flaum, age 97, resident of Seabrook Island, South Carolina, died April 20th, 2012 in Falls Church, Virginia. She was born August 15th, 1914 in St. Paul, Nebraska to George and Ollie Anderson. She had two brothers and a sister. She graduated from the University of Nebraska.
She began her career in her family’s business, The Western Land Roller Company of Hastings, Nebraska. In the 1930s she worked in New York for Henri Bendel and Saks Fifth Avenue. Later she was a successful investor in the stock market.
In 1937, she married Laurence Flaum (deceased 1996). She supported his career as an educator and artist. They lived in the Midwest, and later in South Carolina.
She was a docent at Russell House in Charleston, belonged to The Garden Club of South Carolina, PEO and The Preservation Society of Charleston.
She was well-respected among her friends and family and was known for her gracious demeanor and kindness. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother giving support and quiet direction.
She is survived by her two daughters, Susan Hesser of Falls Church, Virginia and Gwen Perkins, of Lawrence Kansas, and her husband, Lew Perkins. She had four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She also has a large extended family in Nebraska.
She was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Clarence and Vance Anderson and her sister Helen Jane Richardson.
A memorial service will be held August 25th in Hastings, Nebraska. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Seabrook Island Green Space Conservancy, P.O. Box 185, Johns Island, South Carolina 29457-0185.
