Eugene ‘Red’ C. Sims

Graveside services for Eugene C. “Red” Sims, 43, Lawrence will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery.
He died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at Select Specialty Hospital of Kansas City, KS.
He was born on Nov. 30, 1967, in Topeka, the son of Eugene Jacob Carter and Ruby Sims Redrick.
He graduated from Topeka High School in 1986. After school he worked for Gage Bowl and then was the chef and manager of La Familia in Lawrence.
He was a member of the Indian Avenue Baptist Church. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, listening to rap music, playing dominos and blackjack, and was an avid sports fan. He also became a Christian in February of 2010 and attended church regularly.
He married Claudia Toshavik on May 18, 1996, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.
Survivors include three daughters, Nadia Sims, Lawrence, Ashley Pledger, Kansas City, Mo., and Miranda Free, Las Vegas; one son, Justin Free, Lawrence; four brothers, Michael Sims, Los Angeles, Marvin Sims, Kansas City, Mo., Eugene Carter Jr., Topeka, and Ted Bundy, Richmond, Va.; five sisters, Debbie Sims, Kansas City, Kan., Rochelle Carter and Michelle Carter, both of Topeka, Toya Carter, Richard, Va., and Rhonda Pope, Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Mylynn, Jasmine, Malachi, Aki, Massiah, Alliane, Treywyon, Keyon and Eva; and a host of aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by two sons Allen Toshavik and Eugene C. Sims Jr; his father, Eugene J. Carter; and grandparents, Jimmy and Viola Simms.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to the Nadia Sims Educational Fund, sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
