Pauline ‘Polly’ Rankin Reed

A celebration of life for Pauline “Polly” Rankin Reed, 88, Lawrence, is planned for 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at Plymouth Congregational Church. Inurnment will be private at Pioneer Cemetery on the Kansas University campus.
Mrs. Reed died Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Lawrence, the daughter of Paul C. and Nita Constant Rankin.
She had a degree in and had worked as an occupational therapist in Wisconsin and Kansas City.
She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, Plymouth Women, P.E.O., Tri Delta Sorority, Ventura Club, DAR, University Women’s Club, KU Retirees Club and Gourmet Group, and was also a Girl Scout Leader and a Cub Scout Den Mother. She loved to craft, sew and make dolls. She was a member of local interest groups including Doll Club, KU Antique Club, Needlework Club and a quilt group. She reached the formal level of a Master Doll Maker with a doll guild.
She and her husband lived overseas for 11 years in conjunction with his job. They lived in countries including Thailand, South Vietnam, Nepal, Ethiopia, Kuwait and Uruguay before returning to Lawrence.
She married Dr. James Sidney Reed on June 22, 1952. He preceded her in death March 20, 1997.
She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Rankin, and a nephew, Bruce Leffingwell.
Survivors include one son, Ralph P. Reed and wife, Dorothy, Lawrence; one daughter, Jane Reed Wilson and husband, Joseph, Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Glenn, Eddie and Tara; three great-grandchildren, Chelsey, Alek and Lenissa; nephews Bob Scribner, Paul Rankin and David Leffingwell; and niece Jennie Ironwing.
The family suggests memorials to the Kansas University Endowment Association, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
