He died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, after battling cancer. Cremation has taken place.
He was born May 21, 1931, to Earl and Grace (Douglass) Mercer in Beloit, Kansas, the ninth of ten children.
Richard was a 1950 graduate of Wellington Kansas High School. After earning a degree in business from Wichita University in 1957, he was employed as a buyer at Boeing Aircraft Co. He served two years in the United States Army.
In 1961, Richard and his wife, Sherrill, became managing partners of Monkey Island Airport Resort on Grand Lake of the Cherokees in Oklahoma. He served two terms as president of the Grand Lake Association.
In 1982, the Mercers moved to Grove, Okla., where they were involved in various community activities. Richard served on the school board for a number of years. A dedicated blood donor, he gave blood a total of 93 times.
A lifelong suporter of young people, especially in the area of athletics, he was pleased to be recognized by athletes at Free State High for his dedication.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sherrill Bliss Mercer; three daughters: Pamela Hilt and husband Sam and their children, Emma and Siena, of San Gusme, Italy; Kim Mercer and partner Sharon Shepard, Winfield; and Linda Stump and husband Gerald and their children, Nate and Sydney. Spring Grove, Pa; two sisters, Betty Doherty, Mission, and Mary Jo Powers, Winfield; two sisters-in-law, Linda Stewart and Jeannine Crum, Lawrence, niece Dru Fritzel and nephew J. Stewart and their families, all of Lawrence; and many other nieces and nephews.
