Mary Ellen Smith

Funeral services for Mary Ellen Smith, 91, Lawrence, formerly of Topeka, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Campanella-Evans Mortuary in Wamego. Burial will follow at the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith died Friday, May 20, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. 
She was born March 30, 1920, in Wheaton, the daughter and second of seven children of Louis W. and Esther Force Henneberg. She attended local schools and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1937.
She worked as a waitress in the dining room at the Topeka Union Pacific Railway, did custom laundry for a local dentist, was a department coordinator for Ben Franklin Dime Store and a machine operator for Hallmark Cards before she first retired. Later she worked as a Kansas State Capitol Security Guard, from which she retired when she and her husband moved to Dragoon, Ariz. There she worked for Bolens.
She loved to garden, tend flowers, quilting and crocheting, and especially her family.
She married Allan Lawson “Bill” Smith on June 6, 1937, in Oskaloosa. He preceded her in death Jan. 27, 1985.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Frances Joan Welch; and her son-in-law, Richard A. Fasching.
Survivors include her son, Allan L. “Skeet” Smith and wife Virginia, Lynn Haven, Fla.; her daughter, Velora G. “Lori” Fasching, Lawrence; her brothers, Dean Henneberg and wife Majorie, Belvue, and Milton Henneberg and wife Dorothy, Wheaton; her sisters, Fay Wirt, Clay Center, Vera Marten, Wheaton, and Eva Brunkow and husband Duane, Topeka; seven grandchildren, Terry, Kathi, Chris, Kevin, Susan, Shellie and Craig; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and 36 nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Wheaton Congregational Cemetery, St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery or the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, and those may be sent in care of the mortuary, 612 E. Highway 24, Wamego, KS 66547.
