Richard D. Hamilton

A Memorial Remembrance and Masonic Service for Richard D. “Dick” Hamilton, 68, of Lawrence, will be at 7 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the cemetery in Courtland, Kan.
Mr. Hamilton died Tuesday, May 10, 2011, Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born on May 23, 1942, in Junction City.  
He graduated from Wichita School of Barbering in 1965. He and his famiy moved to Eudora in 1965, and came to Lawrence in 1969.
Mr. Hamilton opened Excalibur of Westminster Hair Styling salon in 1979. He enjoyed swapping stories with his clients and keeping current with education and attending hair shows. Prior to opening Excalibur, he had worked at Hillcrest Barber shop and Southbank.
He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting upland game birds, deer, turkey, and even morel mushrooms when hunting season was over. He helped start the Kansas Hunter Safety Program in 1973, and became a certified charter instructor for the program.
He was a founding member of the Douglas County Quail Unlimited chapter, and a member of Ducks Unlimited.  He often served as a source of information for Mike Pierce (Sports) of the Lawrence Journal-World for many years. He was a lifetime member of the NRA.
Dick was a Master Mason in Doric Lodge 83 in Eudora. He received his 32nd degree status with the Scottish Rite Valley of Salina. He was a past member of the Lawrence Fraternal Order of Police, and Isis & Abdallah Shrine.
He married Susan Van in 1961. She survives.
Other survivors include two daughters, Susan “Susie” and husband Darin Leighty of Omaha, Neb., and Natalie Hamilton of Lawrence; and five grandchildren, Tyler, Krista, Amber, Torri and Brett Leighty.
The family will meet friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Warren-McElwain Funeral Home, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
