Gertrude C. Bohanon

Funeral services for Gertrude “Trudy” C. Bohanon, 85, Lawrence, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Kent Winters-Hazelton officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Leavenworth National Cemetery.
Mrs. Bohanon died Monday, March 28, 2011, at Brandon Woods at Alvamar.
She was born Aug. 21, 1925, in Philadelphia, the daughter of Henry and Sarah Rock Pfeil.
She graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls, where she participated in the select orchestra. She later attended Methodist Hospital Nursing School in Philadelphia.
Mrs. Bohanon was a registered nurse and served through the Methodist church as a missionary nurse in the Tahlequah, Okla., area. She also served as a public health nurse in Texas and Oklahoma. She was employed at John Seely Hospital in Galveston, Texas, and at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for several years before concluding her career at Topeka State Hospital.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Presbyterian Women’s Club, the Christian Women’s Club and the Kansas State Nurses Association. She enjoyed music, singing, writing poems and short stories, and cooking.
She married Jacob S. Bohanon. He survives of the home.
Other survivors include three sons, John Gerald “Jerry” Pinder and David Charles Bohanon, both of Lawrence, and Hank Steven Bohanon and wife Men-Jia, Chicago; a daughter, Melanie M. Daniel and husband Darryl, Phoenix; and five grandchildren, Emily Claire, Adam Guy, Madison Grace, Hillary Jane Daniel and Henry Bohanon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Matilda Shain.
Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
