Funeral services for James Barfield Sr., 82, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke’s A.M.E. Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Barfield died Thursday, June 23, 2011, at his home.
He was born Oct. 17, 1928, in Hollandale, Miss., the son of Jim and Rosie Washington Barfield.
Mr. Barfield had been a resident of Lawrence since 1973. He worked as an auto mechanic in Mississippi for 25 years and later worked for Kmart as a forklift operator for 22 years until he retired in 1995.
He married Georgia Anna Turner on Dec. 8, 1948, in Greenville, Miss. She preceded him in death June 12, 1991.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Mattie Lee James and Leanne Barfield; and a brother, Osby Hunter.
Survivors include four daughters, Katherine Edwards, Hollandale, Miss., Evelene Barfield, Toledo, Ohio, Beverly Mitchell, Detroit, and Dora Baker, Los Angeles; seven sons, James Jr., Wesley Earl and Leroy, all of Lawrence, Henry, Thornton, Colo., Roosevelt, Manassas, Va., the Rev. Jim, Toledo, Ohio, and Joe Lee, Omaha, Neb.; 35 grandchildren; more than 45 great-grandchildren; three brothers, James, Marks, Miss., and Jerry Hunter and Eugene Hunter, both of Lawrence; and five sisters, Amanda Barfield, Chicago, Rosie Little, Georgia Ree Hunter, Mattie Turner and husband Aaron, all of Lawrence, and Irene Lane, Topeka.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the mortuary.
The family suggests memorials to St. Luke’s A.M.E. Church, sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
