Dotty D. Newland

Funeral services for Dotty D. Newland, 77, Baldwin City, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin City. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Newland died Wednesday, June 8, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 29, 1933, in Topeka, the daughter of Victor and Lillian Griffin Blevins. Her mother died shortly after her birth and she was raised by Audra Scarbrough. She attended school in Topeka.
Audra and Dotty moved to Lawrence and opened the A&B Root Beer Stand. When the flood of 1951 destroyed the stand they relocated to Baldwin City.
Mrs. Newland enjoyed working crossword puzzles and word search games and loved going to garage sales. She was a leader of Troop 710 Girl Scouts and Brownies, and the Palmyra 4-H Club. Mrs. Newland was a member of the KSHSC Horse Show Circuit and loved all animals and pets. She was an avid KU basketball fan and enjoyed watching the games.
Mrs. Newland attended Wellsville Baptist Church.
She married Lee Trowbridge on Feb. 3, 1952. They later divorced.
She married Ivin “Gene” Newland on Sept. 13, 1955. They shared more than 45 years of marriage together before his death in 1999.
She was also preceded in death by her birth parents; stepfathers Bob Scarbrough and Chester McMillen; a brother, Jean Scarbrough; and sisters Edra Maybie and Rita Limpfort.
Survivors include two sons, Merle Newland, Richmond, and Lary Trowbridge and his fiancée Margie, Lawrence; two daughters, Jana Kelley and husband Garry, and Nancy Cassity and husband Bill, all of Baldwin City; a sister, Colleen Brown, Thornton, Colo.; and eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
