Melville W. Gray

A private memorial service for Melville W. Gray, 85, will be held at a later date.
Mr. Gray died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born March 23, 1926, in Salina, the son of Frank and Sarah E. Fender Gray.
Mr. Gray served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946.
He graduated from the University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and earned a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Kansas University. He was awarded the Samuel J. Crumbine Award, and he was director of environmental services for the state of Kansas Department of Health for 15 years. He was active in the American Society of Civil Engineers and was a national president of the American Society of State and Interstate Water Pollution Control Administrators. He was a life member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He married Frances Herring on Dec. 18, 1949, in Rocky Ford, Colo. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include one daughter, Susan Kramer, Independence, Mo.; two sons, Steven M., Hoyt, and Thomas N. Page, Grand Prairie, Texas; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the charity of the donor’s choice.
