Frances Edna Wempe

A Mass of Christian Burial for Frances Edna Wempe, 92, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Lawrence. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
She died Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born Jan. 1, 1919, in Centralia, the daughter of Louis F. and Orpha J. Yoder Vautravers.
Mrs. Wempe was a graduate of Centralia High School. She attended Kansas Teachers College of Emporia, where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught school in Osage City and Frankfort.
Mrs. Wempe was a longtime member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was a former member of Kanwaka EHU and had served as a 4-H leader while her children and grandchildren were active in 4-H.
She married Francis R. Wempe on Feb. 15, 1944, in Frankfort. Together they farmed and operated a registered Holstein dairy herd west of Lawrence. He preceded her in death in 2002.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.
Survivors include two sons, Donald Wempe and wife Doris, Pomona, and Sam Smith and wife Lauri, Lecompton; two daughters, Connie Kniffen and husband Edward, Tyndall, S.D., and Shirley Bones, Ottawa; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A prayer service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary with a visitation to follow.
The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Visiting Nurses, Rehabilitation and Hospice Care or to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
