Jane Ann Hamilton Shy 1938 - 2011 Topeka
A memorial ceremony for Jane Ann Hamilton Shy, 73, of Topeka, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel, 245 NW Independence Ave. in North Topeka. Cremation is planned. Inurnment will follow at Rochester Cemetery, Topeka.
Mrs. Shy died Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011.
She was born June 13, 1938, in Waterville, the daughter of Leamon Isaac and Velma Christina Scheller Hamilton. She graduated from Marysville High School, Marysville, in 1956.
She graduated as an RN from Stormont Vail School of Nursing in 1959 and maintained her nursing license throughout her lifetime. She spent much of her career as a surgical nurse at Santa Fe Memorial Hospital, Topeka. She also held employment as a nurse in the office of Topeka opthamalogist Dr. Ashley, Portamedic visiting nurse for Victory Life Insurance Company, and Goodyear Tire & Rubber plant nurse. She was an active member of the Stormont Vail Nurses Alumni Association and a volunteer for Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center and the Red Cross.
She enjoyed collecting recipes and pottery, and was an excellent seamstress. She and her late husband, Ray, were members of the Family Motor Coach Association and traveled extensively in their motor home. They owned vacation homes in Colorado and Texas and eventually spent most of the year in Harlingen, Texas.
She married Jim Asbury and later divorced. He preceded her in death. She married Raymond “Ray” Shy on Oct. 23, 1968. He preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 2003.
Survivors include four stepdaughters, Lou Ann Montague, Columbia, Mo., Carolyn Church and husband Ed, Lawrence, Jeannie Wiseman and husband Dennis, Topeka, and Nancy Boulton and husband Matthew, Rich Hill, Mo.; cousins Phyllis Burkhart, Joyce Scheller Burns, Terry Scheller Ferrell, Evelyn Hamilton and Lowell Hamilton; eight grandchildren, Kellee Fitzgerald, Jamee Sloan, Steve and Cory Church, Garrett, Angela and Blake Wiseman, and Chase Winters; and six great-grandchildren, Luke and Lani Fitzgerald, Kaleb Sloan, Malcom and Sophie Church, and Ava Ray Wiseman.
The family suggests memorials to Washburn University Foundation, to benefit Washburn School of Nursing, 1729 SW MacVicar Ave, Topeka, KS 66604.
