Donald Lawrence

Funeral service for Donald L. Lawrence, 88, Sterling, will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Sterling, with military honors by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. Burial will be at a later date at Sterling Community Cemetery.
Mr. Lawrence died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, in Wichita.
He was born on March 9, 1923, in Olathe, the son of Roy and Estella Lunsford Lawrence.
He graduated from Shawnee Mission North High School in 1942, and received a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Kansas State University in 1949. He had lived in Sterling since 1958.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in 1st Division 1st Army. He was wounded in France and received a Purple Heart.
Mr. Lawrence was a 4-H extension agent in Lyon County for seven years before moving to Rice County. He retired from the Farmers Coop in Sterling in January 1988.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, American Legion, Sterling Country Club, and a past 4-H club leader, all in Sterling, and former chairman of the Rice County Arts Council.
He married Marilyn P. “Pat” Redmond on June 5, 1949. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Melanie Twineham and husband Gary, Hutchinson; a son, Brian and wife Joni, Lawrence; a brother, Dean Lawrence; a sister, Jean Hopkins; five grandchildren; and seven grandchildren.
The family will meet friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Birzer Funeral Home in Sterling.
