Roberta Maxine Olsen 1921 - 2011 rural Lawrence
Commendation for Roberta Maxine Olsen, 90, rural Lawrence, will be during the regular 11 a.m. Sunday service Aug. 14 at Trinity Lutheran Church. She will be cremated and have her remains buried at sea by the Navy.
Mrs. Olsen died Friday, July 29, 2011, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
She was born June 13, 1921, in Kirbyville, Mo., the daughter of Patterson Fletcher and Minnie L. Thompson Coggburn. She graduated from high school in Branson, Mo.
Mrs. Olsen earned a bachelor’s degree in California and studied at Massachusetts Institute of Technology through Stanford University. She performed accounting and computer services. Mrs. Olsen worked for FMC in California and for Lockheed in Seattle and Washington. She worked on top secret projects at the time, designing three Navy ships and the Bradley Tank for the Army, which are still in use today. Mrs. Olsen had lived in Lafayette, Calif., and Seattle.
She married Quince J. “Ole” Olsen on July 26, 1946. He preceded her in death Jan. 31, 1990.
She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Dale, Dirk, Leo, Willard and Manford (Bud).
Survivors include two daughters, Cheryl Olsen, Lawrence, and Sharon Anderson and husband Neil, Napa, Calif.; and one grandson, James Neil Anderson.
The family suggests memorials to be distributed by her daughter to local charities, sent in care of Olsen Memorials, 681 E. 1300 Road, Lawrence, KS 66046-9243.
