Lucile Y. Paden

Memorial services for Lucile Y. Paden, Ph.D., 89, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 4, at the First United Methodist Church in Lawrence. A celebration of her life will follow the service with a light lunch served.
Dr. Paden died Wednesday, April 13, 2011.
She was born Oct. 27, 1921, near Sibleyville, the daughter of Elizabeth Aberle York and Oscar Thomas York. She attended Blue Mound Grade School, Vinland High School and Oread High School. She enjoyed archery, dancing and drama.
She graduated from Kansas University in 1943 with a degree in home economics. She later earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in human development and family life. In the process, she pioneered a method of measuring attending behavior in infants. After graduation, she taught at Maple Woods Community College and Ottawa University before going to work for the Kansas State Department of Education as the coordinator of early childhood education programs. While there she facilitated acquisition of federal education money, Kansas Legislature support, and local implementation of the Early Childhood Intervention programs across the state.
She married Glen Paden on Dec. 20, 1942. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, James, Frederick and Raymond.
Survivors include four children, Rabeth Meikle, of Lewiston, N.Y., Dr. Philip Paden, of Ashland, Ore., David Paden, of Lawrence, and Becca Lipnick, of Farmington, N.M.; three sisters, Francis Abbott, New Jersey, and Millie Cooper and Alita Cooper, Lawrence; one brother, Frank York, Olathe; seven grandchildren, Bert, Heather, Christine, James, Aaron, John and Joshua; and eight great-grandchildren, Alex, Sophia, Emma, Elijah, Arlo, Elliot, Oscar and Eagan.
The family suggests memorials to The Haiti Water Project, United Child Development Fund or Planned Parenthood, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
