Joan K. Pierson 1938 - 2010 Salina
Memorial service for Joan K. Pierson, 72, Salina, will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at University United Methodist Church, 1509 S. Santa Fe, Salina.
Dr. Pierson died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010.
She was born June 20, 1938, in Wichita, the daughter of the Carl and Inez Park.
Dr. Pierson earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Emporia State University and a doctorate at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla. She taught at Oklahoma State University and Kansas State University before going to James Madison University, the institution from which she retired as professor emeritus.
She was a member of the business fraternity Delta Sigma Phi, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Alpha Sigma Alpha social sorority. Honors include the award of a Fulbright Fellowship and the James Madison University Outstanding College of Business Teaching Award. She was active in several national and international information systems organizations, and wrote numerous academic articles as well as several textbooks.
She married Don L. Strait. He preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include two daughters, Lynn K. Burbach and husband John P., Huntsville, Ala., and Leslie Pierson and husband Mark Butler, Seattle; three grandchildren, Madison Park Burbach, John Pierson Burbach and Alexander Maxwell Butler; three stepchildren, Todd Strait, Beaverton, Ore., Laurie Lemieux, Portland, Ore., and Dr. Christine Amy Reed, Denver; a sister, Jean K. Barr and husband William, Salina; two nieces; and four nephews.
