Sarah Childers Goodwin

Sarah Childers Goodwin, 85, died Friday, October 15, 2010, at Lexington Park Nursing Center in Topeka.
She was born Nov. 17, 1924, in Rock Hill, South Carolina, the daughter of Edward Lee and Emma Ashe Childers. She graduated from York High School, York, South Carolina, in 1940. She received an AA Degree from Highland Junior College in 1963, and a Bachelor of Education Degree from Peru State College, Peru, Nebraska, in 1966. She later did graduate work at the University of Kansas. She had lived in Topeka since 1970, coming from Hiawatha, where she lived for 10 years.
Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Anne Miller of Lawrence, her son, Frank Edward Goodwin of Hiawatha, and a sister, Helen Childers Wylie of Folly Beach, SC. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Dylan, Laura and David Goodwin, and Amy Miller, and also by five great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Goodwin was a special education teacher for 20 years and taught in the Hiawatha and Valley Falls School Districts.
She was a member of the University United Methodist Church, Topeka. She also belonged to an Eastern Star Chapter, an American Legion Auxiliary, Kappa Delta Pi Sorority, and Retired Military Officers Association.
She married Frank Edward Goodwin on April 3, 1947, in Reno, Nevada. He died Oct. 17, 1967.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Childers and a sister, Ruth Childers Turner.
Cremation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Penwell-Gabel Mid Town Chapel in Topeka.
