LeRoy George Gross

Memorial services for LeRoy George Gross, 85, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Kent Winters-Hazelton officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Gross died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Oct. 5, 1925, in Ellis, the son of Frank and Mary Werth Gross. He grew up in Gorham, and graduated from Gorham High School. He moved to Lawrence in 1949.
He served in the United States Marine Corps, and received a Purple Heart, a Bronze Star, and a Presidential Unit Citation. His unit, the 5th Marine Division, was the division that raised the historic American flag on Iwo Jima.
Mr. Gross worked for Nash Motors. In 1951, he began working for FMC, and retired as purchasing manager in 1975 due to health after 24 years of service.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Shriners International, the Disabled American Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post 852 and the 5th Marine Division. He was also a 50-year member of the Acacia Lodge No. 9 of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons.
He married Shirley Ann Jones on May 11, 1951, in Lawrence. She preceded him in death.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Ann Gross, two brothers, Fred and Virgil, and two sisters, Corinne Zorn and Jenny Roach.
Survivors include a daughter, Leann S. Gross, of the home; a sister, Virginia Dinkel, Russell; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Shriners Crippled Children’s Fund, Lawrence Humane Society, or the Yellow Stone Association, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
