Ellis Ralph Hayden 1924 - 2010 Lawrence
Graveside services with military honors for Ellis Ralph Hayden, 86, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Revs. William Dulin and Rod Hinkle officiating.
Mr. Hayden died Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Midland Hospice House, Topeka.
He was born Feb. 4, 1924, in Ottawa, the son of Ralph P. and Marjorie R. Nordyke Hayden. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School, and later served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific region.
Mr. Hayden was a contractor and built several homes in Lawrence. He was also a baker for several local businesses, including Rusty’s IGA. In later years, he and his wife owned a coin and stamp shop and an arcade. He was active in the First Baptist Church for many years, and later joined North Lawrence Christian Church. He was a member of the Dorsey-Liberty Post 14 of the American Legion, Eagles Lodge No. 309, the Lawrence Coin Club, the Appaloosa Horse Club and the Douglas County Trail Riders Association. He enjoyed music, collecting antiques and going to Circus Circus casino in Reno, Nev.
He married Mary Louise Buerman on June 5, 1942, in Ottawa. She died Aug. 14, 2009.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Lou Butell, in 1972.
Survivors include a son, Stanley Ellis and wife Linda, Lawrence; a daughter, Mary Karen Fraser, Lawrence; a sister, Ramona Smith, Lawrence; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The family suggests memorials to the Lawrence Humane Society, in care of the funeral home.
