Michael McMullen

Michael McMullen, known to all who loved him as Mikey, was born on August 7, 1985 in Tallahassee, Florida, and from the beginning he was a spark of energy in the lives of his family and friends. He died on Tuesday, May 11. He was a gifted athlete who loved playing soccer, playing on teams from early childhood through high school at Bloomington High School North. He served as co-president of the BHSN chapter of Habitat for Humanity. He attended Evergreen State College in Washington and the New England School of Photography in Boston. He became a skilled and passionate photographer with an interest in urban architecture and capturing nature. Mikey was a gifted musician playing guitar in local bands.
Mikey brought a unique energy to the world. His spontaneity and witty personality brought laughter to those around him, bringing humor to situations in unexpected ways. He was an avid reader with a passion for history, philosophy, and politics. This interest was reflected in his strong convictions and deep set of values, which he lived out in his own quiet way. He loved spending time outdoors, camping and fishing with friends. Above all, Mikey cared deeply for his loved ones and was extraordinarily devoted to his family and close friends, many of whom have been with him since preschool. His compassion and loyalty, sensitive heart, laughter, and the creativity that Mikey brought to his music and art will be deeply missed.
Mikey is survived by, in his immediate family, his parents, Mary and Rick McMullen of Bloomington, IN and Lawrence, KS; and brothers Brad and Ben McMullen. The funeral and burial were held in Bloomington on May 15. An endowed scholarship will be established in his name at Indiana University.
