Johanne M. Kapfer

Memorial services for Johanne M. Kapfer, 80, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Plymouth Congregational Church, with the Rev. Dr. Peter A. Luckey officiating. Inurnment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Kapfer died Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at The Windsor of Lawrence.
She was born June 29, 1929, in Omaha, Neb., the daughter of Thornton M. “Bud” and Frances Welden Vaughn. She earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Kansas University in 1962, and later earned a master’s in counseling from KU in 1972.
Mrs. Kapfer was an elementary school counselor for Lawrence Unified School District No. 497 for many years. She had previously worked at Pinckney School for six years and at Cordley School for four years.
She was a member of Plymouth Congregational Church, the Chi Omega Lambda Chapter, Lawrence Country Club, Alvamar Country Club, and a lifetime member of the Kansas University Alumni Association. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels, and was an avid bridge player, knitter, gardener and traveler. She loved educating young people.
She married John F. Kapfer in 1949 in St. Joseph, Mo. He survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Mark Kapfer and wife Linda, Olathe; two daughters, Kelly Kapfer and companion Leslie Dumke, Guilford, Conn., and Kerry Kapfer, Lawrence; three grandchildren, Mark II, Trey and Madison; and three nieces, Jennifer Wyatt, Sarah Whittington and Amy Blankenbiller.
She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, John F. Kapfer Jr.; a brother, Michael T. Vaughn; and a sister, Jane Lucas.
