Francis Eugene Born

Mass of Christian Burial for Francis Eugene Born, 85, Eudora, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Holy Family Catholic Church, Eudora. Burial with military honors will follow in the Holy Family Catholic Cemetery.
He died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Aug. 3, 1924, in St. Paul, the son of Philip Jacob and Mary Helen Paulie Born.
He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy, where he was on the USS Shangri-La in the South Pacific.
He worked for Farmland Industries in Lawrence for 27 years, retiring in 1983. After his retirement, he operated a small motor repair shop out of his home.
He was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church for 61 years. He was an avid fisherman.
He married Bernice Gehlen on Aug. 10, 1948, in Colwich. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include two daughters, Rose Mary Lemmons and husband Michael, of Eudora, and Joyce Lynn Vines, of Lawrence; two sons, Francis Steven Born, of Ottawa, and Larry Michael Born, of Lawrence; two brothers, Eugene Born, of Eudora, and Philip Born, of Nampa, Idaho; five sisters, Gertrude Hoffman and Clara Webb, both of Chanute, Regina Greenlee, of Lawrence, Mary Ann Duling, of Girard, and Betty Roberts, of Erie; seven grandchildren, Howard and Philip “PJ” Born, Robert Lemmons, Trisha Lane, Debra Snell, Douglas Vines and Angela Ayers; 14 great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and two adopted great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.
A rosary will be said at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Warren-McElwain Mortuary-Eudora Chapel, after which the family will meet friends until 7:30 p.m.
The family suggests memorials to the Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund or Veterans Affairs, sent in care of the mortuary.
