Clarence Edmund Flory 1913 - 2010 Baldwin City

Funeral service for Clarence Edmund Flory, 96, Baldwin City, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Willow Springs Old German Baptist Brethren Meeting House. Burial will follow at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Douglas County.
Mr. Flory died Monday, March 29, 2010, at the Vintage Park Retirement Community in Baldwin City.
He was born Dec. 12, 1913, in rural Douglas County, the son of Arthur and Grace Cherry Flory.
The Flory family moved to Pratt County in 1915, where he lived until 1924 when the family again moved back to Douglas County. He grew up in Douglas County and attended Willow Springs School and enjoyed working on the farm and farm life.
He and his brother Alva farmed together with their parents until January 1941. He joined the Lawrence Fire Department until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in March of 1942 and served until January 1946. After his discharge, he returned to the Fire Department until he retired in 1964. Mr. Flory went back to work for the Lawrence Gas Co. for 15 years and retired at the age of 65. After his retirement, he and his wife raised cattle as well as gardened and enjoyed country life.
Mr. Flory was baptized into the membership of the Willow Springs Old German Baptist Brethren Church of Willow Springs on Sept. 4, 1990.
He married Arline Horne on Oct. 19, 1941. She died July 9, 1989. He later married Alpha Pegg on Oct. 24, 1994. She preceded him in death Jan. 26, 2007.
Mr. Flory was also preceded in death by his son Jim in a boating accident in 1970; brothers William and Alva Flory; and a sister, Dela Hale Shoemaker.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
