Roy L. Johnston

Funeral services for Roy L. Johnston, 87, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Johnston died Friday, March 5, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Jan. 25, 1923, in Lawrence, the son of Earl Johnston and Margaret Elder Johnston Sanders. He had been a lifelong resident of Lawrence and attended Lawrence public schools.
Mr. Johnston worked for Kansas University as a painter for 25 years. He was a General Electric appliance repairman for several years prior to working for KU.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a master sergeant in the 86th Infantry Black Hawk Division, Company I, in the Pacific and European theaters during World War II.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14, Odd Fellows, and Elks Lodge No. 595, B.P.O.E.
He was married to Mary Beth Pollard on June 10, 1951, in Lawrence. She died Feb. 18, 2007.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Julie Ann Johnston; two sisters, Betty Jean Johnston and Carol Griffin; and a brother, Fred Johnston.
Survivors include a daughter, Lisa Lynn Johnston, Lawrence; two sons, Bruce Alan and wife Pattie, Lawrence, and David Wayne and wife Melody, Oak Hill, Va.; and a sister, Earlene Bailey, Oskaloosa.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at Warren-McElwain Mortuary and from 1 p.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.
The family suggests memorials to the American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 or a charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of the mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
