Gene Sweeney 1930 - 2010 Lawrence
Graveside memorial services for Gene Sweeney, 79, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Sweeney died Saturday, June 19, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Retirement Community.
He was born June 21, 1930, in Oskaloosa, the son of Daniel R. and Ida Mae Wright Sweeney. He graduated from Liberty Memorial High School and later attended Kansas University.
He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Mr. Sweeney owned and operated the College Motel for more than 40 years, beginning in 1958. He later was a caregiver to his wife.
He married Yoshiko “Marge” Numura in Japan. She died March 9, 2007.
Survivors include two sons, Bob and wife Brenda, Lawrence, and Rich and wife Maureen, Denver; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
