Foster Charles Hoover 1924 - 2010 Lawrence
Funeral services for Foster Charles Hoover, 85, of Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Penwell-Gabel Parker-Price Chapel in Topeka. Burial with military honors by American Legion Topeka North Post 400 will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Topeka.
Mr. Hoover, formerly of Topeka, died Friday, June 18, 2010.
He was born July 17, 1924, in Douglas County, the son of Otis and Jessie Rhodehamel Hoover. He graduated from Overbrook Rural High School.
Mr. Hoover was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, serving on the USS Adhara AK-71. He had lived in Topeka for 40 years before moving to Lawrence six years ago.
He had worked at Haskell Institute, Topeka Supply Depot and Forbes Air Force Base. He retired as heating plant manager from the V.A. Hospital.
He was a life member of American Legion Topeka North Post 400 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Philip Billard Post 1650. He loved to spend time with his family and friends, and was an avid fisherman who told big fish stories.
He married Dorothy L. Markley on Aug. 4, 1946, in Olathe. She preceded him in death in July 1972.
He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Daniel Hoover in April 1995; his parents; a sister, Alberta Hoover; and a brother, Melvin Hoover.
Survivors include a daughter, Connie Detweiler and husband Dennis, of Lawrence; a son, Ronald Hoover and wife Gwen, of Olathe; a sister, Margaret Hoover, Lawrence; two brothers, Arthur and wife Ella, Topeka, and Marion and wife Carol, of Niceville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Darcy Lawler, Kimberly Hoover and Tammy Arp; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral chapel, 245 NW Independence, where the family will receive them from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
