John H. Hardister

Memorial services for John H. Hardister, 89, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, with the Rev. Wilton Detweiler officiating. Private inurnment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Hardister died Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at his home.
He was born July 1, 1920, in Indianapolis, the son of John William and Elizabeth Ann Hammond Hardister.
Mr. Hardister was a homebuilder and a painting contractor, and owned Hardister Painting and Decorating, retiring in 1977 after selling the business to an employee. During World War II, he worked at Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant.
Mr. Hardister enjoyed golf, deer hunting in Colorado, fishing, boating, skiing, horses, square dancing, antique collecting, and traveling domestically and internationally. He was a member of several community and civic organizations for many years.
He married Addene G. Hinchman on Feb. 14, 1945, in Olathe. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include three daughters, Beverly Lasswell and Wanda Cox, both of Lawrence, and Donna Avey and husband Jerry, Longmont, Colo.; a sister, Patty Allen, St. Joseph, Mo.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, O.H. and Leslie, and two sisters, Velva Welsh and Dorothy Ray.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service time Monday at the funeral home.
