Galen Grey Miller 1924 - 2010 Lawrence
Memorial services for Galen Grey Miller, 86, Lawrence, will be at 3 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church. He donated his body to medical research.
Mr. Miller died Monday, May 31, 2010, at Medicalodges of Eudora.
He was born Jan 31, 1924, in Hopkins, Mo., the son of Roy and Edith Miller. He served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater through Africa, Sicily and Italy during World War II, and received four bronze stars.
Mr. Miller first worked as a plumber for Oliver Young Repairs Company of Hopkins, Mo. He worked there for three years before entering the Army. After moving to Lawrence he joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 763 (now consolidated to UA Local 441) as an apprentice and went to work for Huxtable and Associates. He became a journeyman on Sept. 21 1948. He specialized in final construction cleanup and service calls. Many of the sorority and fraternity houses of KU benefited from his skills over the next 50 years. He also worked on the Spencer Museum and several local churches.
During the Depression, Mr. Miller traveled parts of the Midwest working on public construction projects, and learned to operate a bulldozer at that time.
He was a volunteer at Lawrence Community Nursery School. He led the Cub Scout Pack 3060 (First Baptist Church) for several years. He was assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 60 (First Baptist Church) participating in numerous camping trips to Shelly Foster’s lake, Camp Bromelsick and Camp Nash. He was a lifelong volunteer for the Girl Scouts with his wife, Celia. He worked extensively at his daughter’s horse stables, the Stable of Joy near what is now the Goodwill store off 31st Street, and the Lazy J Training Center in Baldwin City.
He married Celia Shell on Jan. 5, 1946. She died July 12, 2006. He was also preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include two sons, Larry and Tom, both of Lawrence; two daughters, Gayle Hayes, Lawrence, and Joy Underberg, Baldwin City; a sister, Dortha Wood, Hopkins, Mo.; two brothers, Richard, Hopkins, Mo., and Donald, Lawrence; 11 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hidden Valley Girl Scout Camp or the Lawrence Community Nursery School, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
