Dorothy M. Simmons 1946 - 2010 Lawrence
Memorial services for Dorothy Marie Simmons, 63, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home & Crematory. Inurnment will be at a later date in Higginsville, Mo.
Ms. Simmons died Friday, May 28, 2010, at her home.
She was born Aug. 3, 1946, the daughter of Earl and Dora Louis Schleicher. She attended Raytown South High School.
Ms. Simmons had worked as a nursing assistant at Four Pines Nursing Home in Raytown, Mo., a taxi cab driver and dispatcher for Yellow Cab in Kansas City, Mo., an emergency 911 operator for the Kansas City, Mo., police department, and a telephone solicitor for Disabled Workers of America. She was a member of Metropolitan Community Church and Trinity Mission of Love and Peace in Kansas City, Mo., and was active with Lesbian Alliance. She also trained and cared for parrots.
Survivors include a son, Carl Ray Burris Sr., Des Moines; a brother, Robert Schleicher, Independence, Mo.; and a grandson, Carl Ray Burris Jr., Lawrence.
She was preceded in death by her mother and her life companion, Geraldine Clack.
The family suggests memorial contributions to a charity to be named at service time, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
