Benjamin W. Newell

Graveside services with military honors for Benjamin W. Newell, 84, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Winchester Cemetery in Jefferson County.
Mr. Newell died Monday, May 31, 2010, at his home.
He was born March 5, 1926, in Oskaloosa, the son of Carl H. and Mary Elizabeth Ray Newell.
Mr. Newell served in the U.S. Navy as a fireman first class. He was a carpenter for Kansas Construction. Mr. Newell also worked for Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant and was a farmer and small-business owner. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post No. 852 in Lawrence.
He married Lorna Marie Dankenbring on Sept. 8, 1952. They shared 39 years of marriage. She died July 12, 1991.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Linda Howson; and a son-in-law, James Howson.
Other survivors include two sons, Ben Jr. and Bill, both of Lawrence; two daughters, Becky Newell, Lawrence, and Diana Pouppirt and husband John, Olathe; a brother, Ray, Lawrence; a sister, Katherine Percifield, Leavenworth; three grandchildren, Ethan Newell, Shawn Pouppirt and Shawntea Arrowsmith; four great-grandchildren, Elijah, Elizabeth, Sophia and Jason; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call from noon to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, where the family will receive them from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Ben Newell Memorial Fund, sent in care of the funeral home, 601 Ind., Lawrence, KS 66044.
