Norma W. Elliott 1920 - 2010 Lawrence
Funeral services for Norma W. Elliott, 90, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Cremation will follow the service, and inurnment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Waterville.
Mrs. Elliott died Tuesday, June 29, 2010, at her home.
She was born May 21, 1920, in Sidon, Miss., the daughter of Cicero C. and Velma V. Hurst Watkins. She moved from Sidon to Indianola, Miss., and graduated from Indianola High School.
She worked for Southern Bell as an operator for several years then moved to Waterville in 1950. She and her husband owned and operated the Market Basket grocery store. The store was sold in 1968, and they moved to Lawrence, where she and her husband owned and operated A&W for several years. She worked for Southwestern Bell in Lawrence and Topeka until retiring in 1982.
She married Melvin L. Elliott in 1941. He died in 1977.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Melvin Lee Elliott Jr.; a brother, John Watkins; and three sisters, Wilma, Leola and Lois.
Survivors include two sons, James D. Elliott, La Pine, Ore., and Kirby L. Elliott, Lawrence; a brother, Joe Watkins, Louisiana; seven grandchildren, Wes, Tracey, Julie, Kim, Kristin, Lynzee and Brett; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 3 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will meet them from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
