Michael Palij Jr. 1913 - 2010 Lawrence

Funeral services for Michael Palij Jr., Ph.D., 96, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Lawrence Catholic Center, with Monsignor Vince Krische and Father Steve Beseau officiating. Burial will be at a later date at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery, South Bound Brook, N.J.
Dr. Palij died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor.
He was born Dec. 22, 1913, in Khorostkiv, Ukraine, the son of Michael Sr. and Palahna Slobodian Palij. He attended the University of Minnesota and earned a Ph.D. in history from Kansas University.
Dr. Palij was a historian and librarian at KU. He developed the Ukrainian book collection at KU. He established and endowed a regional library and museum in Khorostkiv, Ukraine, and authored two major books on the Ukrainian Revolution from 1917 to 1925. He wrote numerous academic articles on Ukrainian immigration to the United States and Canada.
He married Maria Bech in 1949 in Germany. She died in 1977. He married Lubomyra Welyhorsky-Denysiuk on Dec. 1, 1979, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. She survives, of the home.
Other survivors include a son, Peter Palij and wife Linda Leibengood, Ardsley, N.Y.; and two grandchildren, Maria and Mark Palij.
The family suggests memorials to the Palij Family Fund, sent in care of the KU Endowment Association, 1891 Constant Ave., Lawrence 66047.
