Katherine E. Johanning

Funeral services for Katherine E. Johanning, 97, Baldwin City, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. John’s United Church of Christ, Baldwin City. Burial will be in the St. John’s Cemetery.
Mrs. Johanning died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, in Overbrook.
She was born Oct. 16, 1912, in Lawrence, the daughter of Rose Roller and James Brass.
She attended Kansas University, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught in one-room schools from 1932 to 1943. After her marriage she became a housewife.
Mrs. Johanning was a member of the St. John’s United Church of Christ since 1943 and was a member of the Women’s Fellowship at the church. She enjoyed many years on the farm, especially her gardening, and canning, preserving and cooking the foods she grew. She was known as a loving, kind and compassionate person.
She married Carl Johanning on May 25, 1943, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death Sept. 13, 2003.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.
Survivors include a son, Orville and wife Judy, of Baldwin City; a daughter, Sondra Nickel and husband Daryl, Potomac, Md.; and four grandchildren, Amy Johanning, Carrie Gregoire, John Nickel and Kathy Nickel.
The family will meet friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Lamb-Roberts Funeral Home in Baldwin City.
