Jerry P. Nichols

Funeral services for Jerry P. Nichols, 88, Hutchinson, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel, Hutchinson, with the Rev. Mark Conard presiding. Military honors will be conducted by the Navy Honor Guard. Cremation will follow. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Fairlawn Burial Park.
Mr. Nichols died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in Hutchinson.
He was born Aug. 11, 1921, in Hutchinson, the son of George and Harriett M. Haynes Nichols. He was a 1939 Hutchinson High School graduate.
A World War II Navy veteran, his LST-122 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in operations in Marshall Islands, Guam and Okinawa.
Mr. Nichols was a charter member of Paganica Country Club, a lifetime musician playing the drums in several dance bands, and a member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, Veterans of Foreign Wars Bob Campbell Post No. 1361, Hutchinson-Reno Masonic Lodge No. 124 A.F. & A.M., and Midian Shrine, Wichita.
He married Ruth Fisher on Jan. 9, 1942, in Hutchinson. She preceded him in death Dec. 11, 1984, after 43 years of marriage. He later married Frances M. Handy Dutton on Nov. 9, 1987, in Sun City, Ariz. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Larry and wife Dara, Colleyville, Texas; a daughter, Linda Mullens and husband John, Lawrence; a stepson, Steve Dutton and wife Julia, Rockport, Texas; three stepdaughters, Sue Rogers and husband Rex, Eureka Springs, Ark., Kay Cooper and husband Gary, North Platte, Neb., and Jo Ann Dutton, Palm Desert, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, with family present from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., and from 9 a.m. until the time of service Friday at Elliott Mortuary, 1219 N. Main, Hutchinson 67501.
The family suggests memorials to First United Methodist Church in Hutchinson or a charity of the donor’s choice.
