Lewis Roberts Lawrence

A visitation with the family of Lewis “Wimp” Roberts, 77, Lawrence, will be held from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
Lewis died Sunday, January 3, 2010, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He graduated from Corning High School in 1950 and moved to Omaha, NE, to begin his career with G. W. Onthank, a division of Decca Records. Afterwards, he trained as a steamfitter and was employed by Early Engineering on the underground missile sites protecting the Strategic Air Command base at Bellevue, NE.
Following a serious work-related injury, Lewis left Early Engineering to go into sales and property management for Dial Realty, a regional commercial real estate company. In 1972, a job change prompted his move to Lawrence, where he continued his 30-year career in commercial property management throughout a multi-state region. The past ten years, he has worked as a Bond Coordinator for Court Services and as a Bailiff for Douglas County, KS.
Lewis will be remembered as a story-teller extraordinaire, an avid sports enthusiast, and a man who delighted in the company of others. He was passionate about his family, his animals and his country. His many interests included reading, listening to music, traveling, and tending his garden.
Survivors include his wife Mary Lou Richey Roberts, whom he married in 1950; his three children, daughter Lynn Gafford, Plano, TX, son Billy Roberts, Dallas, TX, and daughter Michelle Freeman and husband Dan, Lawrence; nine grandchildren, Ryan Gafford, Rachel Roberts, Andrew Roberts, Emily Roberts, Billy Roberts, Laura Roberts, Brandie Roberts, Alexis Freeman and Mackenzie Freeman; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Hylton Roberts, and one sister, Jessie Krauth, both of Corning, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his son, Bradley Roberts, Lawrence, in 1991.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials to the Oncology Unit of Lawrence Memorial Hospital, the Lawrence Public Library or the Lawrence Humane Society be sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home, 601 Indiana St., Lawrence, KS 66044.
